Each treatment will vary depending on the injury and the individual, and in most cases symptoms and pain will lessen immediately after treatment. However sometimes people experience discomfort or soreness in the area that has been treated. This is due to the manipulation of the tissues during treatment, and isn't a cause for concern. Any soreness or discomfort should eliviate 24-48 hours after treatment, specific information about what to expect will also be discussed in person during any treatments. If pain lasts longer than two days post-treatment get in contact.
To encourage the best healing possible after treatment, and eliviate any discomfort quicker, make sure you drink plenty of water. The most important thing is to keep fluids up to aid with the healing process. Stretching and exercise can help post treatment, as it increases blood flow to the tissues that have been treated. Ice and heat together will also help with managing soreness and increasing blood flow- applying ice will reduce pain, followed by heat (e.g. hot water bottle) immediately after to encourage fluid into the muscles- which will assist healing.
Massage and other forms of manual therapy can cause symptoms such as bruising, soreness and headaches- which will vary depending on where is treated. These are all common symptoms for the first 48 hours, and are not a cause for concern. Any pain post-treatment should always be able to be managed by keeping hydrated and taking paracetamol/ibuprofen where necessary. If this isn't the case or you have any concerns don't hesitate get in contact.
I am a great believer that feeling comfortable with your therapist increases treatment benefits, so feel free to contact me at any time.
